Nature of the results
The Maintenance Calorie Calculator uses the Mifflin–St Jeor equation — one of the most accurate publicly validated formulas for estimating resting metabolic rate — combined with an activity multiplier to produce a Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) estimate.
While this approach is widely used and supported by nutritional research, it produces a population-level average estimate. Your actual calorie needs may be higher or lower depending on factors the calculator cannot measure, including:
- Metabolic adaptation — your metabolism can slow or speed up in response to diet history
- Medical conditions — thyroid disorders, insulin resistance, PCOS, and many other conditions affect energy balance
- Medications — certain drugs measurably alter metabolic rate or appetite
- Body composition — muscle mass burns more calories than fat at rest; the calculator uses weight, not body fat percentage
- Accurate activity estimation — most people find it difficult to objectively assess their true activity level
